Alternate Nostril Breathing, or Nadi Shodhana, is a foundational yogic pranayama technique designed to balance the flow of energy (prana) in the body. It systematically alternates breathing through each nostril to calm the mind, reduce stress, and promote physiological equilibrium.
- 1Sit comfortably in a meditative posture with a straight spine and relaxed shoulders.
- 2Close your right nostril with your right thumb. Inhale slowly and deeply through your left nostril.
- 3Close your left nostril with your ring finger, releasing your thumb from the right nostril. Exhale slowly and completely through your right nostril.
- 4Inhale slowly and deeply through your right nostril.
- 5Close your right nostril with your thumb, releasing your ring finger from the left nostril. Exhale slowly and completely through your left nostril.
- 6This completes one round. Continue alternating nostrils, maintaining a smooth, even breath, for several minutes.
Nadi Shodhana primarily modulates the autonomic nervous system by stimulating the vagus nerve, promoting parasympathetic dominance and reducing sympathetic overactivity. The alternating nostril occlusion influences the nasal cycle, which is linked to hemispheric brain activity; breathing predominantly through the right nostril is associated with left brain activity and sympathetic tone, while left nostril breathing is linked to right brain activity and parasympathetic tone. By balancing these flows, the technique aims to harmonize brain hemispheres, improve cerebral blood flow, and enhance cardiorespiratory coherence, leading to reduced heart rate, lower blood pressure, and a more stable emotional state.
