Huff Coughing Technique
A gentle but highly effective airway clearance technique designed to move mucus from the smaller airways to the larger ones for easier expectoration. It involves taking a deep breath and actively exhaling with an open glottis, mimicking the action of fogging up a mirror.
- 1Sit up straight with your chin tilted slightly upward to keep your airway open.
- 2Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose, filling your lungs about three-quarters full.
- 3Hold your breath for 2 to 3 seconds to allow air to get behind the mucus.
- 4Exhale forcefully and steadily through your mouth with an open throat, making a 'huff' sound as if you are fogging up a mirror.
- 5Repeat the huff 2 to 3 times, then perform one strong, traditional cough to clear the mobilized mucus.
- 6Rest and perform relaxed diaphragmatic breathing for a few cycles before repeating the process if necessary.
The huff cough relies on the equal pressure point (EPP) principle. By keeping the glottis open and using a forced, steady expiration, the EPP moves distally into the smaller airways. This prevents premature airway collapse while creating high-velocity airflow that effectively shears mucus off the bronchial walls. This mechanism safely mobilizes pulmonary secretions without the excessively high intrathoracic pressures and potential airway closure associated with a traditional explosive cough.
