Jalandhara Bandha Breath (Throat Lock)
A traditional yogic practice involving the contraction of the throat and neck muscles during breath retention. It stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system by applying pressure to the carotid sinus and vagus nerve, promoting deep relaxation and metabolic regulation.
- 1Sit in a comfortable, upright position with the spine straight and hands resting on the knees.
- 2Inhale deeply and slowly through the nose, filling the lungs to about 80 percent capacity.
- 3Hold the breath (Antar Kumbhaka) and gently drop the chin down and back toward the chest, lifting the sternum to meet the chin.
- 4Engage the throat muscles slightly, feeling a gentle compression in the front of the neck.
- 5Hold this position and the breath for as long as comfortable without straining.
- 6To release, lift the head back to a neutral position, relax the throat, and exhale slowly through the nose.
Jalandhara Bandha mechanically compresses the carotid sinuses located in the neck, which contain baroreceptors. This compression artificially signals the brain that blood pressure is elevated, triggering a reflex via the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves to decrease heart rate and systemic blood pressure. Additionally, the breath retention (kumbhaka) associated with the lock increases CO2 tolerance and enhances the Bohr effect, improving cellular oxygenation and vagal tone.
